The Cycle and Functions of Life
-The Ecosystem of a Tidal Flat-

Inside the mud of the tidal flat are many bacteria which break down and turn into food the organic matter washed down by the rivers. Plant plankton breed on these nutrients and the rays of the sun, eventually becoming food for crabs, shrimp, various shellfish, lugworms and small fish. These in turn feed the birds, and humans eat the larger fish and shellfish.

This cycle of eat and be eaten works to clean the seawater and create new life in the oceans. We humans live within this cycle, called an ecosystem. Once we destroy it, we cannot replace it.
