There are reed beds along the Shonai River to the north of Fujimae Tidal Flat. Reeds have been used to make window shades for centuries in East Asia. They also have been used to make boats like the small boat on display here. Reeds are an important part of the environment of this area. Harvest mice build nests that hang from the reeds. You can hear the calls of the oriental great reed warbler in summer as they mark out their territory, and different types of crabs live among the reeds along with mudskippers.
