The History of the Save Fujimae Association

Go into the southern half of the seminar room and you will see a covered with posters. They are in chronological order and follow the history of the movement to stop the Fujimae landfill project. The original group changed its name to the “Save Fujimae Association” in 1991. They held symposiums, organized demonstrations, and did surveys of Fujimae Tidal Flat. Their results showed how important the title flats were. The group was active locally and internationally during the 1990s, and other environmental groups along the east Asian Australian flyway supported the efforts to stop the landfill and preserve the title flat. The Save Fujimae Association enlisted the help of experts to show how important Fujimae Tidal Flat was as a stopover for migratory birds. Nagoya City canceled the project in 1999 and instituted a strict garbage separation policy. With the help of its citizens, the city was able to reduce the amount of landfill garbage and extend the life of the present landfill by 20 years.

藤前干潟を守る会の歴史

研修室の南側へ進むと、ポスターで埋め尽くされた壁が見えます。これらは年代順に並べられており、藤前干潟埋立計画を阻止するための運動の歴史をたどることができます。当初の団体は1991年に「藤前干潟を守る会」へと名称を変更しました。同会はシンポジウムの開催、デモの実施、そして藤前干潟の調査を行いました。その調査結果から、藤前干潟がいかに重要であるかが明らかになりました。同団体は1990年代を通じて、地域内および国際的に活発に展開し、東アジア・オーストラリア渡りルート沿いの他の環境保護団体も、埋め立て中止や干潟の保全に向けた取り組みを支援しました。「藤前干潟を守る会」は専門家の協力も得て、重要な渡り鳥の中継地であることも明らかにしました。名古屋市は1999年に計画を中止し、厳格なゴミ分別政策を導入しました。市民の協力により、埋立処分されるゴミの量を削減し、現在の埋立地の寿命を20年延長することに成功しました。
