Fujimae Tidal Flat was registered as a Ramsar site in November 2002, but all around the tidal flat there were plastic bottles, styrofoam, and other trash that had washed in from upstream. Local residents started the "Fujimae Tide Flat Cleanup Campaign" to restore the environment to a level suitable for a Ramsar Treaty site and to maintain a safe place for children to play. The clean-up activities are held twice a year in spring and fall. The school districts around Fujimae Tide Flat work together with the local citizens, organizations, and businesses, and government agencies have joined in the effort, and now approximately 2,000 people participate in the cleanup.
